Employer Provided Health Insurance is a Great Benefit
Many people don’t realize what a great perk or benefit having company sponsored and paid for health insurance really is worth. Your employer may take a measly $50 a week from your pay as your contribution toward your family health insurance. Be assured that they are paying at least that much and more in matching monies to cover your health insurance every week. An average bill for a family health insurance plan for 4 people could run upwards of $500 per month for an employer group plan. The weekly stipend you pay from your paycheck is usually less than half the total monthly premium at the average employer.
Replacing that insurance with your own family health insurance can be a costly move as the premiums for the exact same coverage could double when you apply for them as a individual and not part of a group plan. If you have a really great health insurance plan that includes prescription coverage, eyeglasses and dentistry work you are in the top tier. If your employer pays for it all then you almost have to consider the monthly cost of your family health insurance as an extra paycheck each month.
Sometimes people don’t consider their health insurance benefit as part of their income when in reality it can be 10% of your annual salary. And if you have school age children that need doctor visits, glasses and regular dental work, what would those medical bills run if you paid all of them out of pocket. For an average family of four it would surely be in excess of that extra 10% in salary. So, what is 100% employer provided health insurance really worth? Wow!
