Every couple of years, there is a study done by doctors and researchers regarding cough remedies and cold and allergy remedies. The results are typically always the same: suppressants taken for dry coughs, expectorants taken for chesty coughs, and antihistamines taken for allergies don’t really work.
The studies conclude that over-the-counter allergy, cold and cough remedies found in pharmacies have little benefit when compared to a placebo. Personally. I find this very hard to believe. If you’ve ever had allergies or a hacking cough that was so bad that you couldn’t sleep, the relief from over-the-counter allergy and cough remedies is wonderful. I can understand not relying on commercial medicines for every ache, pain, or discomfort but for many of us, they are a necessity for occasional use.
If these cough remedies and allergy remedies didn’t work, no one would buy them, right? If you walk into a pharmacy, there are shelves full of medicines,each promising a few hours of relief. Some one must be buying them. The products available in the UK market have all been cleared by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for safety and effectiveness. They work. I, for one, could not go to work some days without allergy medicines so I know they work. There are just some studies that come up with unbelievable conclusions, I guess.
